Ms. Dunninger spent elec-
tion day in Metairie, Mr.
Duke's home town. "It was
frightening, seeing face-to-
face people who were Duke
supporters," she said.
"When you see cars filled
with children go by, and the
parents are yelling pro-
fanities and anti-Semitic
slogans at you because of the
signs you're carrying — that
is very frightening."
Jewish activists in the
Louisiana Coalition against
Racism and Nazism — the
central anti-Duke organiza-
tion — were grateful for the
strong Jewish financial sup-
port in the last days of the
campaign, she said.
But they were also
distressed by the fact that
few Jewish organizations
played a more direct role in
the anti-Duke battle out of
fears of provoking a
backlash.
"Jews provided a lot of
money, and there were many
Jewish individuals in-
volved," she said. "But the
local Jewish groups did
almost nothing. We en-
countered a good deal of
resentment about that." ❑

The National Jewish
Democratic Council is ap-
parently serious about its
plans to energize a new Jew-
ish activism in the Dem-
ocratic party.
The group has hired a
grass-roots coordinator to
develop programs in com-
munities around the coun-
try.
Marc Solomon is coming to
Washington from Des
Moines, Iowa, where he was
executive director of the
Jewish Community Rela-
tions Council. He also served
as state director in Sen. Paul
Simon's unsuccessful run for
the 1988 presidential nomi-
nation.
"The long-term goal is to
get folks more involved in
both campaigns and in the
party," Mr. Solomon said in
an interview last week.
"We'll be doing that by set-
ting up state and local
chapters of the organization,
and by encouraging much
greater involvement in the
party and in the campaigns
of Democratic candidates."
The creation of a Jewish
grass-roots effort on behalf of
the Democrats, he said, was
"long overdue."
