HANUKAH GREETINGS FROM Renee and Ron Forman and Staff Sedaka's star seemed to fade. When the United States was hit with what he refers to as the "Beatle Invasion," he retired back to the piano to write songs for other per- formers. By the end of the '60s, Mr. Sedaka took himself, his wife and two small children to England. He performed a concert at London's Royal Albert Hall that combined his "oldies" with a crop of new material he had composed. The au- dience approved overwhelm- ingly of the "new -Sedaka," and his career once again took off. "The '50s and '60s encom- passed one particular style of writing for me," Mr. Sedaka says. "Then, I had an extraor- dinary comeback in 1975 with another style of song, something that was right for the times." "Musically, I hope I've grown through the years," he continues. "I hope I've become more sophisticated, freer, written things that I take a chance with more courageously musically, lyrically. I'm trying to keep on track by writing contem- porary music." Not one to rest on past laurels, Mr. Sedaka also began playing with sym- phony orchestras across the country, singing his own music but also playing classical pieces on the piano. "I do miss that feeling of in- volvement with the great music," he admits, "but I also have to continue to sing and write the kind of music that I do because that's just as much a part of me. I find im- mediate gratification. I love to perform. I find it the most exciting, addictive thing one can do. For me, getting a stan- ding ovation in front of a live audience is still one of the greatest highs of all time. It never, ever goes away." ❑ Readers Theater Closes Series The final performance of the 1991 fall series of Readers Theater will take place 3:30 p.m. Nov. 24 at the Aaron DeRoy Theatre of the Maple- Drake Building.
