Doug Schubot, son of the founder, said his father Jules first began selling gems out of his pocket when he was an usher in the theater. The first store was located on Madison Avenue in Detroit in 1917. In the 1930s the store moved to the Metropolitan Building. The late Jules Schubot sold jewelry to many Hollywood stars including Tony Mar- tin, Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr.. In 1975, the store moved to its pre- sent Troy location. Today Doug and his wife Sydell and their son Brian all work together. Doug Schubot looks forward to the day when his newborn grandson, the fourth genera- tion Schubot, joins the fami- ly business. Howard Wolpe speak at Temple Beth El recently about lobbying on Capitol Hill for Jewish issues at a recruitment meeting for the United Jewish Appeal's eighth annual Washington Young Leadership Con- ference, scheduled for March 15-17. Recruiting chairmen Lynn Sachse and Gilbert Borman hope to attract 100 Detroiters. Potential par- ticipants spotted at the meeting included: Paul Magy, Shelly Nadiv, David Groner, Nick Balberman, Jeff Erlichman, Laura Hirschhorn and Suzi Alter- man.
