WHAT MAKES
SAMMY RUN

WE WILL BE OPEN THANKSGIVING DAY
7 a.m. TO 2:30 p.m.

BY JACK KEROUAC

*$5 OFF*

ammy Glick had been on

■ J the road for four days

now, swimming in the
fullness of the cosmos and
wishing he had taken Neil
with him. Ah, Neil, whose
smile was beatific and
gracious and bountiful and
haunted him wherever he
went. Neil, who knew secrets
he told no one and who knew
even greater secrets he told
everyone.
"Ahhh, Sammy," he could
hear Neil saying, "The one
and only indispensable
Sammy."
Sammy liked to dress
smart and he talked smart,
but always Neil could dress
smarter and talk smarter.
But Sammy knew that some
day he would out-dress Neil
and he would out-talk Neil
and that Neil might have
the answer to the universe
inside his head, but Sammy
knew that one day he
—Sammy Glick who had
once lived on Delancey
Street! — would have the
key to the executive men's
room and that that would be
the answer to his own per-
sonal and irrefutable uni-
verse. II]

THE NIGHT
THE GHOST GOT IN

e had all gone to sleep
early that night Father
was in Warsaw on business,
> and Mother was alone in her
bedroom. My brother, Jacob,
was sleeping, as usual, in his
room right down the hall from
mine.
At 10 p.m., Jacob came
running breathlessly into
my room and jumped under
my covers.
"Didn't you hear it?" he
asked. "A howling and a
raging that made me wonder
if there was a God of
Goodness anymore."
I told Jacob that I was so
tired from studying in
cheder all day that I hadn't
heard anything.
Jacob threw his shoe out
the window at the home of
Gimbel, the tzadik who lived
next door.
Gimbel came over and per-
formed an exorcism.
Just then, Father returned
and asked what all the
commotion was about.
"Oh, nothing, Father,"
We went back to bed. The
next morning, we found a
dead golem in the dining
room. ❑
