landscaped rock garden and shrubbery. Inside, the sanctuary seats 225 and has six stained glass windows as well as a high an- tique window crafted by a Jewish glassmaker in Italy. Nature is also helpful: every Rosh Hashanah, the con- gregants perform the ritual of tashlich, casting their sins upon the waters, by simply walking a block and a half to the Atlantic Ocean. Another Ventnor syna- gogue, Beth Judah, is at 6725 Ventnor Avenue. Just three blocks north of it is a conve- nient stop for hungry travelers. Lox, Stock and Bagels, 6433 Ventnor, is a bakery with 14 varieties of water bagels: blueberry, raisin, sesame poppy, whole wheat, and more. There's also apple strudel, other baked goods and heaping platters of whitefish, lox or • kippered salmon. Owner Steve Picker, originally from New York, came to the Jersey shore to work in the casinos as a dealer. But he soon had the idea for a better deal. "Nobody was baking bagels!' So a friend with a bakery in Vineland taught him how to bake bagels, and now he bakes all of them himself. For nourishment of another sort, the Jewish Community Center at 501 North Jerome Avenue in Margate, the next town south of Ventnor, offers a whole range of cultural at- tractions as well as sports facilities. "The tourists really keep us on our toes. In the summer, they almost take over the place, but we love having them," says Rubye Eberson, membership director. In Atlantic City, members of the Chelsea Hebrew Con- gregation at Dover and Atlan- tic Avenue also enjoy welcom- ing tourists. This Conser- vative congregation is the nearest in location to the boardwalk casinos, so visitors often find their way from the boardwalk to the modest brick building with a Star of David on its facade. "People who visit the casinos often stop in," says longtime member Albert Rossan. "And they're very impress- ed. They can't believe there's a daily minyan." Of course, as a resident of Atlantic City for 73 years, he knows better. So do the other Jewish residents of this sea- shore town. They know that finding a morning minyan or a Shabbat service is not a gamble at all in the casino capital. In fact, it's a sure bet.
