Jews In Atlantic City
Are A Sure Bet
RUTH ROVNER
Special to The Jewish News
I
n any season, the board-
walk in Atlantic City,
N.J., is full of activity.
With gleaming modern
casinos on one side and an
ocean view on the other, it
draws crowds of visitors, who
stroll the boards, eating ice
cream cones or saltwater taf-
fy, watching impromptu en-
tertainers or heading straight
for the gaming tables.
No wonder. This seashore
town, which hosts the Miss
America pageant and boasts
a famous boardwalk, has also
become the gaming capital of
the East Coast.
Less well known is the fact
that this casino capital has an
active Jewish life. In fact,
whatever happens at the
gaming tables, it's a sure bet
that Jewish travelers will find
varied Jewish attractions
here, including synagogues, a
modern Jewish community
center and plenty of Jewish
style delis.
"This is a surprisingly ac-
tive Jewish community. It's a
small seashore community
with six synagogues, an ac-
tive Jewish federation, a
Jewish Community Center,
and a large well-established
Hebrew Day School. It's
remarkable for such a small
community," says Rabbi Gor-
don Geller of Temple Emeth
Shalom in Ventor, the town
adjoining Atlantic City.
Of course, because of Atlan-
tic City's identity as a resort
town and gaming center,
these congregations are hard-
ly typical. For example, the
125 families who are
members of Rodef Shalom are
quite accustomed to visitors
at their daily minyans and
Shabbat services. Theirs is
the only Orthodox congrega-
tion in Atlantic City and it's
located at 4609 Atlantic
Avenue just minutes away
from the boardwalk casinos.
"We get a tremendous
number of out of town visitors
who are here for one or two
days, and they're looking for
a place that has a minyan,"
says Doris Scholnick, ad-
ministrative assistant.
Though she's accustomed to
the way tourists turn up
regularly, she's also some-
times surprised by the unex-
pected situations that occur
in this casino town. This past
Rosh Hashanah, for example,
several visitors from New
York came to the synagogue
with paid tickets to the ser-
vices. It turned out they'd
been "comped" for the high
holidays by the Sands casino.
The casinos often offer
perks to their best patrons —
limos, free meals at the casino
restaurants, tickets to the
shows in the casinos — but
Ms. Scholnick had never
heard of high holiday tickets
as a perk. "It totally floored
me," she confesses.
Other congregations also
get their share of visitors who
have come to town primarily
for the gaming. "We get a big
influx of visitors, and we also
get a lot of gamblers who
want to cover their bets — so
they come to synagogue," ad-
mits Rabbi Geller cheerfully.
He's even had Jewish visitors
turn up at Temple Emeth
Shalom who have lost money
at the tables and come to the
synagogue for assistance.
The congregants and rabbi
take all this in stride. "We're
very friendly, and all visitors
who come get a welcome,"
says the rabbi, a Milwaukee
native who came to the Jersey
shore five years ago to head
the congregation in Ventnor.
Their synagogue is a large
corner building at 8501 Vent-
nor Avenue, surrounded by a
