fic, mostly donkey carts, a
new opening was made in the
face of the tower.
The Lion's Gate is only a
few yards north of the Temple
Compound and is the gate
closest to the First Station of
the Cross in the Via Dolorosa.
Like Herod's Gate, it leads
directly to the Moslem
Quarter. Since the Crusades,
Christian pilgrims have call-
ed it St. Stephen's Gate, in the
belief that the first Christian
martyr was put to death in
the Kidron Valley below.
The Lion's Gate is ap-
proached by a steep and nar-
row uphill lane and its arch-
ed portal is topped by bat-
tlements and studded with
stone carvings, the most
notable of which are four
lions.
In ancient times, when it
was open, the Golden Gate
gave direct entry to the Tem-
ple Compound. A large and
magnificent double-arched
structure, it was probably
originally built in the seventh
century C.E. An early Jewish
tradition holds that the
Messiah will enter Jerusalem
through this gate.
In the south wall of the
Temple Compound are three
sealed gates, two of which are
Herodian. Although of no
special architectural interest,
being simply openings in the
wall, they are of considerable
historic interest. The Single
and Triple Gates — they
derive their name from the
number of their portals —
lead into the vast subterra-
nean chamber of 400 square
meters, supported by eighty-
eight huge pillars, once used
as hitching posts for the
horses of the crusader order,
the Knights Templar. The
Templars established their
headquarters above it, on the
southern section of the Tem-
ple Compound, the tradi-
tional site of Solomon's
palace, and they therefore
called the underground
chamber "King Solomon's
Stables."

The Dung Gate is mention-
ed in the Book of Nehemiah
as a dispatch point for the ci-
ty's refuse. Once a mere
breach in the wall, renova-
tions in recent years have
made it the closest point of
entry to the Western Wall.
Since the reunification of
Jerusalem in 1967, millions
of Jews from all over the
world have entered through
this gate in order to pray at
this most sacred site. ❑
