WATCH AND CLOCK SHOW
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 23rd
10:00 a.m. to 5:45 p.m.

Irwin Cohen sports a 1984 World Series championship ring.

at club management
meetings.
Yes, he even has the ear of
controversial Tigers President
Bo Schembechler.
"Bo is a real mentsh,"
Cohen smiled. "He's a
tremendous guy. He listens to
what you have to say."
Apparently, Tigers manage-
ment doesn't mind hearing
from Cohen.
"Irwin often offers keen in-
sight into the business and
the game," said Bill Haase,
senior vice president of plan-
ning and operations. He hired
Cohen eight years ago.
"I've never heard a negative
comment about Irwin," Haase
added. "He's very easy to talk
to and he handles himself well
at all times. I enjoy his dry
humor. He's very quick-witted.
I have the highest regard for
Irwin as a person."
Cohen respects tradition as
much as any Tigers fan, but
he believes it's time to build a
new Tiger Stadium. As some-
one who sells tickets for
games at the venerable ball-
park at Michigan and Trum-
bull, Cohen has a unique
perspective of the stadium's
major problems for spectators.
"Tiger Stadium is the most
overrated stadium in the ma-
jor leagues," he said. "It has
the least amount of box seats
of any major league park
(11,732) and about half the
total seats (capacity is 52,416)
are in the outfield.
"When people call for
tickets, they all want seats

around the infield or down the
foul lines, but there just aren't
that many in those areas."
Large crowds mean many
fans have to purchase
obstructed-view seats 'behind
posts, another drawback.
"It'll be a happy and sad day
for me when we get a new
ballpark," Cohen said.
The Tigers have proposed
building a 47,000-seat, base-
ball-only open-air, grass field
facility with plenty of on-site
parking and other amenities,
a plan which Cohen endorses.
"Irwin's a good ambassador
for the club because he takes
the time to explain things to
customers," Haase said. "After
people talk to him, they have
a better understanding about
the Tigers and Tiger
Stadium."
"I admire the game of
baseball," said Cohen. "Not
the players, because the
players become `used-to-be's'
as soon as their career ends,
while the game goes on.
That's why I admire scholars.
Their knowledge continues to
grow."
Leave it to Irwin Cohen to
put things in perspective. ❑
