Profits for Frederick's
have been lucrative since its
establishment. The store's
more than $98 million
profits for 1990 increased 23
percent from $80 million in
1989, and jumped from $65
million in 1988 and $58 mill-
ion in 1987. Sales are ex-
pected to reach $110 million
in 1991.
Retail stores likewise
posted profits this past year,
increasing from $4 million
in 1989 to $5.6 million in
1990. That same year, six
Frederick's shops closed and
25 new ones opened. Stores
are located in 37 U.S. states.
The Frederick's mail-order
business, which accounts for
about 39 percent of the com-
pany's total sales, saw a 30
percent increase in 1990, up
from $29,265,000 in 1989 to
$38,181,000. Last year,
Frederick's distributed
about 26 million catalogs; in
1991 it will send out 30
million.
Frederick's, which is listed
on the New York Stock
Exchange, has seen its
slumps: in the early 1980s,
stock dropped from $7 to
$1.90 a share. But business
revived in 1985, when

as chairman of the board.
Mr. lbwnson, who called his
approach a "desleazification"
of Frederick's, revamped both
the look of retail stores and
the company's merchandise.
Catalog drawings were
replaced by photographs,
and some of the racier outfits
were removed. The
Hollywood store also receiv-

Frederick Mellinger
retired in 1984 and died in
1990. His wife, Harriett, re-
mains active in the com-
pany.

Bush Thwarts Plans
To Arrest Ashrawi

Jeruslaem (JTA) — Presi-
dent Bush is credited with
thwarting any plans the
Israeli authorities may have
had to arrest Hanan
Ashrawi, who was
spokesperson for the Pales-
tinians at the recent Middle
East peace conference in
Madrid.
Israeli police said late last
week that they had suffi-
cient evidence to hold her for
trial on charges of violating
the Israeli law forbidding
contacts with Palestine Lib-
eration Organization repre-
sentatives. But they have
not acted.
Mr. Bush is said to have
expressed concern about
"the plight of Hanan
Ashrawi" at the end of a
meeting last Friday with 23
prominent Arab Americans
at the White House.
One of them, George
Salem of the executive board
of the Arab American In-
stitute, reported that the
president "shook my hand as
he was leaving and said,

`Please know that Hanan is
on my mind and I'm paying
very close attention to what
is happening over there.' "
In Washington, State
Department deputy spokes-
man Richard Boucher also
expressed concern Friday
about media reports that the
Israeli police had recom-
mended Ashrawi's prosecu-
tion.
The West Bank activist,
who lectures at Bir Zeit
University, gained global
recognition for her elo-
quence in presenting the Pa-
lestinian case at Madrid.
Although not official
members of the Palestinian
negotiating delegation, Ms.
Ashrawi and her east
Jerusalem colleague Faisal
Husseini advised the delega-
tion, which had one bilateral
session with the Israelis.
Both Ms. Ashrawi and Mr.
Husseini met frequently in
Jerusalem with U.S. Secre-
tary of State James Baker
during the months leading
to the conference opening.
