Dem. Hopefuls
Seek Dollars

With economic pessimism
spreading like the flu, the
cadre of Democratic presi-
dential challengers is
suddenly smelling blood.
And several of those can-
didates have been diligently
plowing the Jewish corn-
munity, looking for critical
seed money.
Sen. Torn Harkin,The Iowa
liberal, appeared at an event
in New York hosted by the
World Jewish Congress, and
visited Borough Park in
Brooklyn.
In Borough Park — one of
the nation's leading hotbeds
of Orthodox political ac-
tivism — Mr. Harkin was
shepherded by Rabbi Jacob
Bronner, a politically savvy
leader of the Belz Chasidic
community.
Rabbi Bronner — the man
who conceived the idea of
last year's $400 million in
housing guarantees for
Israel — supported the can-
didacies of George Bush and
Ronald Reagan.
"I am supporting him for
president," Rabbi Bronner
said of Mr. Harkin. "He has
the 'fire in the belly' it takes.
He's very pro-education.
And we need someone in the
White House who is
outspoken on Israel."
The campaign of Arkansas
Gov. Bill Clinton has hired
David Ifshin, a longtime
Jewish activist and political
consultant, as general
counsel and senior adviser to
the campaign.
"I will do legal work for
the campaign, and be fully
involved in the political
strategy," Mr. Ifshin said in
an interview. "And I will
advise the campaign on
issues involving the Jewish
community."

Foreign Aid
Is In Jeopardy

With the recession raging
and an election around the
corner, there is increasing
talk in Capitol corridors
about using foreign aid
money to pay for some of the
nation's urgent domestic
needs.
Last week's proposal by
Senate Majority Leader
George Mitchell, D-Maine,
sent shivers down the spines
of Israel's friends here.
In casting about for corn-
promises in the battle bet-
ween. the White House and
Congress over extending
unemployment compensa-
tion, Mr. Mitchell proposed
freezing foreign aid to pay
for the extended benefits. 0
