Their father was Murry Gage Wilson, who imported heavy machinery and wrote songs in his spare time; their mother was Audree Neva Korthof, who played the piano and raised three sons (the third Wilson brother, Dennis, was for many years drummer for the Beach Boys. He died in a boating accident in 1983.) The Wilson family lived in Hawthorne, a suburb of Los Angeles. All the boys loved music, but Brian was the most musically ad- vanced. When he was 8, he made his debut singing "The Old Soldier" at a con- cert his aunt organized. The song was written by his cousin, Mike Love. During the 1950s, Brian and Carl Wilson joined with Mike Love to form a rock group, called the Surfers and then the Pendeltons and finally the Beach Boys. They hired a singer, Al Jardine, then wrote a song about surfing — at the suggestion of Dennis Wilson, a devoted surfer. Hearing the Beach Boys' first record, appropriately titled "Surfin'," Capitol Records immediately signed the band. Their next record was another sw- ingin' surfer single, "Surfin' Safari," which reached No. 14 on the music charts. From "Surfin' Safari," it was just wave after wave of surfer hits. Other Beach Boy greats include "Fun Fun Fun," "I Get Around" and "Surfin' USA." Many of these masterpieces were written by Brian Wilson, who after the release of the 1963 album "Surfer Girl" became the group's man- ager. Even with this new responsibility, he con- tinued to write music for the Beach Boys and others. Amazingly, he came up with yet more songs using the word "surf," like the Jan and Dean hit, "Surf City." In 1966, the Beach Boys released what would be their biggest hit, "Good Vibrations," which sold more than 1 million copies. In 1988, the group was in- ducted into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame. ❑ NEWS I Q■ I N F I NITI 8 ) 1991 Only 4 o Choose From Q45 Full Active Suspension 0 DOWN PAYMENT $49 00* plus tax per mo. 36. mo. lease Fred Lavery Infiniti 525 S. It prompted the Italian newspaper Il Messaggero to ask Mr. Haider point-blank if he is an anti-Semite. "Absolutely not," he replied in an interview in the paper. He denied having said in a June speech to the provin- cial Parliament of Carinthia that the labor policies of the Third Reich, which sent Jews to concentration camps, were on the right track. "It is false. that I gave a positive evaluation of Nazism," he said. He accus- ed the Socialists of distorting his remarks to try to break his party's coalition with the conservative but main- stream People's Party. Mr. Haider won in Vienna after a right-wing campaign based on a familiar mixture of nationalism and xenophobia. His party doubled its 1987 vote to win 23 seats in the 100-member municipal council, making it the second strongest party after the Socialists.
