and planning divisions will
be among the hundreds of
volunteers phoning Detroit-
ers on behalf of the 1992
Allied Jewish Campaign on
Super Sunday, Dec. 15.
Callers will ask Detroiters
to help their fellow Jews in
need here and around the

benefits tens of thousands of
Jews through more than 60
Federation beneficiary
agencies.
Represented at Super Sun-

and Sinai Hospital. The agen-
cy shift will take place from
2 to 4:45 p.m.
Hundreds of volunteers, in-

teens, families and synagogue
members also will partici-
pate. Additional volunteers
are needed on all shifts: 9:30
a.m.-12:15 p.m., 11:45 a.m.-

Locally, 5 percent of De-
troit's Jews are living at or
near the poverty level.
According to the Jewish
Family Service, for the first
time in their lives, many need
help to pay rent or buy food.
Especially hard-hit are elder-
ly persons, unemployed in-
dividuals and families on
marginal incomes.

Immediate Aid

The immediate need for
cash to help Jewish people
here and in Israel has pro-
mpted an all-out community
effort by the Allied Jewish
Campaign. A portion of the
contributions to Detroit's
Campaign will go to UJA and
the American Jewish Joint
Distribution Committee for
assistance to Jewish people in
33 countries and Israel.
At the same time, Federa-
tion has commitments to
thousands of people through
its beneficiaries at home.
Checks should be made out
to the Allied Jewish Cam-
paign, and sent to the Jewish

service to youth, the aged and
people with disabilities,
among others.
In Eastern Europe, elderly
Jews require kosher food,
clothing and help with basic
items to survive the winter.
Jews remaining in the Soviet
Union and North Arica re-
quire religious items to live
Jewishly. Campaign funds
channeled through the Joint
Distribution Committee pro-
vide food, medical care, trans-
portation and absorption
assistance to the 2,000 Jews
remaining in Ethiopia.
To volunteer for Super Sun-
day, call Leonard Milstone at
Federation, 965-3939.
