ne of the leading
actresses of the
1930s was a sad
child who found
happiness in the
home of a Jewish couple.
She was born Ruby Stevens.
When she was 2, her mother died
and her father abandoned the
family. Ruby, who was not Jewish,
was sent to live in various boar-
dinghouses, among them the Flat-
bush, N.Y., home of Mr. and Mrs.
Harold Cohen.
"Mr and Mrs. Cohen were the
first people ever to brush my hair,
to care how I looked," recalled
Ruby, who grew up to be Barbara
Stanwyck. "They were the first to
give me affection!'
The entertainment industry is
