Knesset Votes
To Lift Immunity

Jerusalem (JTA) —
Knesset member Yair Levy
of the Sephardic Orthodox
party Shas was stripped of
parliamentary immunity,
clearing the way for him to
be prosecuted for alleged
fraud and theft.
But the full Knesset's 48-
33 vote by secret ballot was
much closer than the 17-0
decision by the House Com-
mittee that Mr. Levy should
be required to stand trial.
Political observers said the
discrepancy may well reflect
the lawmakers' impatience
with the ongoing police in-
vestigation of Shas leaders,
which so far appears to have
yielded little.
Although the top Shas
man, Interior Minister Arye
Deri, and his colleague,
Communications Minister
Rafael Pinhasi, have been
under investigation for well
over a year for alleged finan-

cial improprieties, neither
has been charged with any
crime.
The Justice Ministry said
Mr. Levy and his wife,
Geula, would be charged
with theft, forgery and
misrepresentation with
respect to about $200,000
allegedly taken from the
Shas-affiliated El
Hama'ayan Foundation.
Mr. Levy has denied all
charges, but has refused to
cooperate with the police.
The Orthodox Knesset
member got support from an
unorthodox source.
Charlie Biton, founder of
the Black Panther move-
ment, a longtime Commu-
nist and now independent
Knesset member, charged
from the rostrum that the
charges against Mr. Levy
reflect the establishment's
hostility toward Sephardic
parties such as Shas.
