CALL:
stake, the Egyptians are
said to be more eager than
ever not to alienate the more
radical Arab delegations.
With the approach of
November 29, the anniver-
sary of the 1947 resolution
partitioning Palestine and
the traditional date for the
General Assembly to discuss
"the question of Palestine,"
it remains apparently
undetermined just how far
— and how long — even the
partial moratorium on
discussing Israeli issues will
extend.
"Some aspects of the
Palestine question, such as
the report of UNWRA (the
UN body overseeing Pales-
tinian refugees), have a hu-
manitarian dimension and
will be examined by the
General Assembly," said
Abdulaleem El-Abyad, press
minister for the Egyptian
U.N. delegation. Beyond
that, the mission had no fur-
ther comment: "The whole
issue is under consideration
in the Arab group (caucus)."
But it seems clear the pre-
sent quiet will not hold in-
definitely.
"Everyone expects that in
a week or two, there will be a
follow-up" to the initial
Madrid talks, said Ambas-
sador Elaraby.
"If we enter next year
without progress," he said,
with a diplomatic chuckle, "I
expect there would be an ex-
plosion here."
Charged Killer
Stands Trial
New York (JTA) — The
trial of Rabbi Meir Kahane's
accused assassin is schedul-
ed to begin Nov. 19, follow-
ing the completion of jury
selection this week.
The racial composition of
the jury became an issue
after the prosecution charg-
ed lawyers for El Sayyid
Nosair, the defendant, with
deliberately excluding
whites from the panel.
Such exclusions have been
ruled illegal by New York
courts.
Defense attorney William
Kunstler denied he had kept
prospective jurors off the
jury because of their race.
But the New York Times
quoted him as saying, "We
want a Third World jury of
non-whites, or anyone who's
been pushed down by a
white society."
In response to the prosecu-
tion motion, the presiding
judge, Alvin Schlesinger,
said he would require both
sides to explain how race
was not a factor in further
challenges to jurors.
