Dig For A Day
At Sites In Israel

istas of desert
wilderness. Ancient
walled cities. Images
of wise patriarchs, heroic
judges and charismatic pro-
phets. A real, yet dreamlike
landscape in Israel exists for
people to experience. Re-
mains from the world of the
Bible are revealed every day
in the dozens of archae-
ological excavations taking
place year-round throughout
Israel. Every new excava-
tion contributes to the
knowledge of ancient times
and the daily life of the peo-
ple who once lived in Israel.
An extraordinary experience
awaits the traveler who
yearns to take part in unear-
thing the mysteries of the
past but has limited time to
spare.
The Israel Antiquities Au-
thority, Israel's agency
responsible for archae-
ological excavations, finds,
restorations and publica-
tions, is offering "Dig for a
Day" for those interested in
a chance at digging out a
piece of heritage by spending
one day (or a half day) with
one of the many expeditions
working on ancient sites in
Israel.
In a special orientation
session given before the ex-
cavation the volunteers are
briefed by a professional ar-
chaeologist. They learn
about archaeological ex-
cavations, discoveries and
techniques, as well as the
history and significance of
the chosen site. Accom-
panied by the archaeologist,
volunteers proceed —
transportation is provided —
to the place where the dig is
already in progress. At the
end of the day, the archae-
ologist sums up the finds.
Archaeological excava-
tions are conducted in Israel
throughout the year, but the
main excavating season is
from June to September. A
minimum of eight par-
ticipants is required for a
day's work. Cost of par-
ticipation per person, for
groups smaller than 15, is
$20, for larger groups, $13
per person. No previous ex-
perience is necessary and
everyone is welcome to share
the experience.
For details of programs of
Dig For A Day, or longer ar-
chaeological excavations,
contact the Israel Anti-
quities Authority, P.O. Box
586, Jerusalem 91004.

ment Tourist Office: South-
Central region (214) 991-
9097.
