Sinai Hospital Appoints
Four New Medical Chairmen

Sinai Hospital's board of
trustees recently announced
the appointment of four new
medical chairmen at the
Detroit-based hospital.
The new chairmen are Mor-
ris Brown, chairman, depart-
ment of anesthesiology;
Michael L. Schwartz, chair-
man, department of diagnos-
tic imaging/radiology; Linda
Hotchkiss, acting chairman,
department of psychiatry;
and Eduardo Phillips, acting
chairman, department of
surgery.
Dr. Brown of Farmington
Hills, has served as vice
chairman of the department
of anesthesiology at Sinai
since 1988. He has served as
director of the department's
resident education program
since 1985.
Dr. Schwartz, of Birm-
ingham, joined Sinai in 1989
as director of neuroradiology.
In 1990, he was selected as
medical director of the Rose
Imaging Center in Farm-
ington Hills.
Dr. Hotchkiss, of Grosse
Pointe Park, has served as in-
terim chairman of the depart-
ment of psychiatry since

Temple, Church
Host Concerts

Temple Beth El will join
with North Congregational
Church of Southfield in two
interfaith concerts 10:30 a.m.
Nov. 17 at the church and 8
p.m. Nov. 22 at the temple.
The concerts will feature
the combined choirs of the
congregations, the Temple
Beth El Choral, led by Cantor
Gail Hirschenfang, and the
voices of North Congrega-
tional Church under the
directorship of the minister of
music, Dr. Harry Langsford.
The Sunday morning
speaker at the church will be
Rabbi Richard C. Hertz.
The concerts represent the
joining of former neighbors.
North Congregational
Church, formerly North
Woodward Congregational,
was housed for many years at
the corner of Woodward and
Blaine in Detroit. During
much of that time, Temple
Beth El was located across
the street at Woodward and
Gladstone. Other close con-
nections include the friend-
ship of Dr. Harry Langsford
and former Temple Beth El
music director Dr. Jason
Tickton.
Both of the events are open
to the public at no charge.

Dr. Phillips, of Farmington
Hills, has served as chief of
surgical endoscopy at Sinai
since 1984. He served as coor-
dinator of surgical education
at Sinai from 1974-1976.

Dr. Beckman

Sinai Hospital's Dr. Hugh
Beckman, chairman of the
department of ophthalmol-
ogy, has been named the reci-
pient of the sixth annual Max
Osnos Award for Distinguish-
ed Leadership.
The award is bestowed an-

nually on an individual
whose contributions have
made a significant difference
at the Detroit-based hospital.
Dr. Beckman will be official-
ly honored at Sinai's annual
meeting, Nov. 18 at Temple
Beth El.
Dr. Beckman, of Bloomfield
Hills, has served as chairman
of the policy and planning
committee of the Medical
Staff Executive Council since
January 1991. He was in-
strumental in the Sinai physi-
cian re-dedication movement
which has increased the pa-
tient census at Sinai. Most
recently, Dr. Beckman was
appointed a member-at-large
of Sinai Hospital's new
13-member governing board.

Federation Apartments
Set Chanukah Bazaar

The residents of Jewish
Federation Apartments, Inc.
will hold their 13th annual
Chanukah bazaar and raffle
11 a.m.-4 p.m. Nov. 17 at
Prentis Federation Apart,
ments in Oak Park.
Proceeds from the bazaar
will go to the resident coun-
cils of Prentis, Hechtman and
Teitel Federation Apartments
for in-house programming
and activities and their an-
nual gifts to the Allied Jewish
Campaign.
The first bazaar, held in
1978, was a sale of unclaim-
ed furniture from a building
storage room. Since then,
under the leadership of retir-
ing executive director, Helen
Naimark, the bazaar has add-
ed boutique items, jewelry,
knit goods and a hot dog/latke
lunch. Several years ago, the
raffle was begun.
Resident chairpeople are
Sybil Bodzin and Frieda Kolb,
Prentis Federation Apart-
ments; Irving Adelman, Rae
Bednarsh and Harriet Wein-

traub, Teitel Federation
Apartments; and Eve Lieber-
man and Julia Rosenthal,
Hechtman Federation Apart-

AJC Is Topic
Of TV Program

The Allied Jewish Cam-
paign will be the topic of
"Open Doors" at 6 a.m. Nov.
17 on Channel 4.
Moderated by Sherri Schiff,
the program will feature 1992
Allied Jewish Campaign
Chairmen Lawrence Jackier
and Norman Pappas who will
discuss overseas and local
needs, respectively. Alan
Goodman, executive director
of the Jewish Family Service,
will discuss how the recession
and government cutbacks are
affecting the Jewish
community.

The Women's Division of
the Greater Detroit Interfaith
Round Table of the National
Conference of Christians and
Jews will hold a meeting
12:15 p.m. Nov. 20 at the U-D
Mercy Conference Center.
Archbishop Adam J. Maida,
Rabbi Irwin Groner, Dr.
William K. Quick and Imam
Muneer G. Fareed will share
the platform and discuss
Catholicism, Judaism, Pro-
testantism and Islam.
Archbishop Maida has serv-
ed as chairman of the Na-
tional Conference of Catholic
Bishops' Canonical Affairs
Committee, was president of
the Canon Law Society of
America, and chairman of the
board of the Pope John XXIII
Medical-Moral Research and
Education Center in
Massachusetts.
Rabbi Groner, spiritual
leader of Congregation
Shaarey Zedek in Southfield

and current president of the
Rabbinical Assembly, has had
sermons, essays and articles
published in periodicals of the
Conservative movement.
Dr. Quick, senior minister
of the Metropolitan United
Methodist Church, originally
came from South Carolina.
He has been delegate to
several international re-
ligious conclaves and has
been on the executive com-
mittee of the World Methodist
Council.
Imam Fareed, originally
from South Africa, is current-
ly the imam of the Islamic
Association of Greater
Detroit. Imam Fareed is a
graduate in Islamic theology
and law from King Abdul
Aziz University, Saudi
Arabia, and the Islamic
University, Deoband, India.

Hosts Professor

Dr. Clinton Bailey, an ex-
pert on Arab-Israeli relations
and professor at Tel Aviv
University, will address a
Jewish Federation Young
Adult Division gathering on
behalf of the 1992 Allied
Jewish Campaign, 6:30 p.m.
Nov. 26, at the home of
Doreen and David Hermelin.
Past Israeli liaison with the
Lebanese Shiite Moslem com-
munity, the American-born
Dr. Bailey also served as a key
adviser to the Israeli Ministry
of Defense. He is a professor
of Middle East history and
has published several works
on the Middle East, including

Jordan's Palestinian Chal-
lenge and Bedouin Poetry from
Sinai and the Negev.

The gathering, for con-
tributors of a minimum of
$2,500 to the 1992 Allied
Jewish Campaign, is being
