ecution."
The "continuing depriva-
tion of rights of Syrian
Jews" was another subject
raised at the meeting, chief-
ly by Canadian Irwin Cotler,
a professor of law at McGill
University.
Mr. Cotler, who serves as
counsel to the association,
denounced "the acts 6f
reprisal" against Syrian
Jews, especially those at-
tempting to exercise their
right to leave the country.
Mr. Cotler observed that
Syrian law granted that
right and that Syria is a par-
ty to several international
undertakings on the subject.
But Syrian Jews, accor-
ding to Mr. Cotler, are an
"isolated community which
has been taken hostage ,by
its authorities." He quoted
the Syrian foreign minister,
Farouk al-Sharaa, in Madrid
last week to the effect that
the fate of Syrian Jews
would be linked to progress
in the peace process.
The E.C.'s expanding role
was the theme of several
speeches. "Europe and the
Jewish people share the
same democratic values and
a common history," said
Markus Pardes, vice presi-
dent of the association.
Several suggestions were
offered in that connection.,
including the integration of
Israel into the European
economic sphere and draf-
ting legislation to outlaw the
Arab boycott of Israel.

KKK Recruits
In Germany

Bonn (JTA) — Reports that
the Ku Klux Klan is actively
recruiting members in Ger-
many has prompted State
Prosecutor Alexander von
Stahl to order an investiga-
tion.
A spokesman for the pros-
ecutor, Hans-Jurgen
Forster, said it was concen-
trating mainly on media
reports of Klan activity in
both western and eastern
Germany.
The Klan is said to have
held meetings in April and
September in Herford,
Westphalia, and in Konigs
Wusterhausen, near Berlin.
In both places, American
Klan activists organized the
ceremonies and delivered
speeches.
One of the Americans
named was Denis Mahon,
described as leader of the
Klan in Missouri and Okla-
homa.
