Resettlement Service has
several Sinai physicians who
volunteer their medical ser-
vices. Some have agreed to
respond to emergency calls
at night. "We also find
pediatricians willing to do-
nate their time, since Sinai
has no pediatrics," Mrs.
Hyman said.
Dr. Marc Feldman, an
internist in charge of Sinai's
primary care unit, is hopeful
the new plan will solve some
of the problems he and his
cadre of 39 residents experi-
ence.
"We want to take care of
these people, but it's becom-
ing overwhelming," Dr.
Feldman said. "It's almost
like Sinai is turning into a
little HMO (health
maintenance organization)
for the Russians. When the
numbers were smaller, we
could handle them. But now,
they're starting to over-
whelm other departments."
Dr. Feldman, who vol-
unteers to see Russian pa-
tients, usually has a
translator present." Com-
munication is difficult without
them," he said.
Dr. Feldman's department
screens Russian patients
and he suggests other
departments do the same.
"Instead of every depart-
ment worrying about
treating everybody, they can
first perform a kind of
screening triage, so they can
weed out those who don't re-
quire serious medical atten-
tion. Then they can refer the
rest to specialists." ❑

Girl Collects
For The Needy

A 12-year-old Huntington
Woods girl has collected
8,000 sample-size personal
hygiene items for the needy
since September.
Elana Erdstein has col-
lected the items by estab-
lishing collection boxes at
the Oak Park, Huntington
Woods, Royal Oak and
Berkley libraries, and at
Temple Emanu-El. The
items have been distributed
to emergency shelters and
Yad Ezra.
