particular groove of a
perpetrator's tooth with the
bite on a victim.
Dr. Warnick, who says he
spends about 10-15 hours on
each case, is never without
his silver briefcase filled
with camera equipment and
charts for making a record of
corpses' dental work.
His records also contain
reports of alleged child
abuse, more and more cases
of which he's seeing, Dr.
Warnick says. Bite marks
are especially valuable in
such instances because
abusive parents often claim
a young sibling made the
teeth marks.
"But we can quickly de-
termine which family mem-
ber made the bite," Dr.
Warnick says.
In addition to his work
with the police and the
medical examiner's office,
Dr. Warnick also serves as
associate clinical professor
at the University of Detroit
School of Dentistry and
serves on the board of direc-
tors for the American Board
of Forensic Odontology, and
the American Society of Fo-
rensic Odontology's board of
