doesn't see just bits and
pieces. He sees the big pic-
ture.
He sees such a big picture,
in fact, that when he went to
paint it, Mr. Arie produced a
seven-panel, 7 x 38-foot pic-
ture that traces Jewish his-
tory from the giving of the
Ten Commandments to the
creation of the State of
Israel.
Next summer, Mr. Arie's
painting, The Mission:

visit Detroit, its first stop on
an international tour. The
picture will be on display at
the Maple-Drake Jewish
Community Center's Janice
Charach Epstein Muse-
um/Gallery May 7 through
June 11.
Sharon Zimmerman, di-
rector of the gallery, said she
took one look at Mr. Arie's
painting, "and realized the
museum/gallery would be a
good place to debut it."
She said The Mission will
be shown with works by
other Jewish artists as well
as "A Day in the Life of the
Warsaw Ghetto: A Birthday
Trip in Hell." The traveling
exhibit, organized by Yad
Vashem in Jerusalem, com-
prises photos of the Warsaw
Ghetto taken by a Nazi
soldier on his birthday. The
pictures only recently
became available to the
public.

Avraham Leaf of Oak Park
is director of the Art Judaica
Educational Foundation,
which is helping coordinate
the showing of The Mission
in Detroit. He said Mr. Arie,
an Israeli native now living
in Toronto, produced the
painting as a way of pro-
moting Jewish education.
Born in Warsaw in 1939,
Mr. Arie escaped with his
mother and brother to the
Soviet Union when he was 4
years old. In 1948 they set-
tled in Israel.
While serving with the
Israel Defense Forces in the

Dubi Arie worked
for more than two
decades to create
The Mission.

Six-Day War, Mr. Arie
entered the Old City of
Jerusalem and stood before
the Kotel. It was then he had
the vision of a massive pain-
ting that would show the
struggles and triumphs of
the Jewish people.
Mr. Arie moved in 1974 to
Canada, where he worked
for more than two decades to
create The Mission.
In conjunction with The
Mission exhibit here, Art
Judaica, a nonprofit founda-
tion, will host a number of
cultural and educational
events.
"Our goal is to build
bridges between Jews, as
one people in the Diaspora
and Israel, and between
Jews and non-Jews," Mr.
Leaf said. "When non-Jews
see the painting, it gives
