NEW YEAR

Its

U-M Museum
Mounts Print Show

"Jasper Johns Prints from
the Kaufman Collection," a
selection of 18 prints by one
of America's most provocative
contemporary artists, will
open at the University of
Michigan Museum of Art
Nov. 16 and remain on view
through Jan. 12. Lent from
the collection of Mr. and Mrs.
Richard Kaufman of
Muskegon, the prints in this
exhibition date from the mid-
1970s and include such
familiar images as Corpse
and Mirror (in two versions)
Ale Cans and the Savarin
series.
In conjunction with the ex-
hibition Jasper Johns Prints
from the Kaufman Collection,
the Museum of Art will pre-
sent as part of its 1991-92
Family Programs "Films:
Jasper Johns," a series of
films illuminating Johns' life
and work, 10:30 a.m. Dec. 7 in
Auditorium D of Angell Hall.
Both "Jasper Johns Prints
from the Kaufman Collec-
tion" and "Films: Jasper
Johns" are free and open to
the public. The film series is
recommended for young and
older adults.
Known for his fascination
with such objects as targets,
maps, numbers and letters,
Mr. Johns stunned the art
world in 1955 with his ir-
reverent series of American
flag paintings and has con-
tinued to attract attention
ever since. By positioning
such common objects as ale
cans, coffee cans, light bulbs,
flags and numbers in new
context, Mr. Johns explores
the nature of meaning and
perception.
Museum hours are
Tuesday-Saturday 10 am.-5
p.m.; Sunday 1-5 p.m.

Despite its November 1947
resolution to make
Jerusalem an "international
city" under United Nations
administration, in February
1948 the UN Security Coun-
cil declined to organize the
defense of the city against
attacks from Arab League
forces. In May the General
Assembly voted not to be
responsible for Jerusalem
once the British Mandate
ended.
