Next come callbacks, when executives for the company making the commercial will meet with the top six actor candidates. Then the lucky one is chosen. Shooting usually begins around 6 a.m. The commer- cial's star will first get a wardrobe fitting, which usually means a plaid shirt and pink, light-green or powder-blue pants, and lots of polyester if the commer- cial is for floor wax. Next comes makeup, which gen- erally entails little. "They want you to look very real," Ms. Dworkin explained. Meanwhile, if food is in- volved in the commercial, it, too, is going through a beau- ty process. Air is pumped into hamburger buns to make them appear plump and fresh; sesame seeds are painted and stuck on with glue. Ms. Dworkin says actors are serious about commer- cial work, even if it means getting excited about French fries or finding life's mean- ing in a bottle of dishwashing liquid. "As actors, we're asking you to believe us whether it's as Olga in Chekhov's The Three Sisters or selling hamburgers," she said, though she does laugh when recounting one incident. She was starring in a commer- cial about cupcakes, and the producers were determined to make them appear the most luscious food on earth. They told Ms. Dworkin, "Make love to that cup- cake." Ms. Dworkin is married to publicist Andrew Freedman and has one son, Alex- ander. ❑
