roast, or heavily garlicked
lamb.
8. Fossi 1988 Chianti.
When most people think of
Chianti, they picture wine in
quaint straw-covered bottles.
Not so, says Mr. Parker. This
Italian wine is indeed strong
and concentrated, but it also
reveals a "lovely intense,
leathery, berry fruitiness," as
well as a silky texture. Goes
well with spicy food.
9. 1988 Tyrrell's Long Fiat
Red. Australia scores again
with this "hedonistic" red
wine which is "fleshy, smooth
as silk, and round." Drink
with grilled steak or filet
mignon, and catch a whiff of
its "raspberry, smoky-scented
bouquet."
10. Quinta do Noval 10
Year Old Tawny Port. Pro-
duced in Portugal, this
opulent, smooth wine
possesses a "forceful, intense
bouquet of sweet fruit, nuts,
caramel and fruitcake." It's
best sipped at the close of a
long meal, accompanied by
cashews or hazelnuts. Note its
"long, heady, alcoholic
finish."

Gifts Of Safety

The fire department sug-
gests you consider smoke
detectors, fire escape ladders
and portable fire ex-
tinguishers as gifts to family
and friends.
The home smoke detector is
considered one of the best and
least expensive means of pro-
viding an early warning
when a fire begins. It takes
only a screw driver and a
stool to install most detectors.
In fact, install the detectors
as part of your thoughtful gift
to ensure it is put up immedi-
ately. Detectors should be
placed outside sleeping areas
between the bedrooms and
the rest of the house. They
should be located on the ceil-
ing, away from walls, corners
and air ducts.
Fire extinguishers are a
valuable gift. The ABC multi-
purpose type is recommend-
ed. This type can be used on
any type of small fire to put
it out quickly.

For two-story homes, a
home fire escape ladder could
be a life-saver. These ladders
should be 15 to 20-feet long
and lightweight enough to be
used by a child. Keep the lad-
der stacked carefully under
the window or coiled under
the bed. Check them from
time to time to ensure they
have not become tangled. You
can purchase these metal lad-
ders in most hardware
stores. ❑
