But you don't have to buy a $166 bottle of Mouton Rothschild 1982 to enjoy a good wine. World- renowned wine expert Robert Parker picks the best wine values of 1991, all of them costing $15 or less. Many of these wines originate in areas not widely known for their vintages, such as Australia, Washing- ton State and Chile. That's an important factor in the low price. "These places don't get as much attention for their wines, so they keep their prices down," says Mr. Parker, who is author of Bordeaux, Parker's Wine Buyer's Guide and The Wines of Burgundy, among other publications. "But the quality can be just as good as wines produced in France or California," which are often sold at highly in- flated prices, he adds. Here, then, are Mr. Parker's picks for 1991 and his reasons why: 1. Domaine St. Michelle Sparkling Brut. RD. • FARMINGTON HILLS 855-4488 Sale Items Excluded. $25.00 Minimum Purchase Per Item California sparkling wine, produced by the Kronheim Co., possesses a "fresh, lively flavor with an apple-like fruitiness." It may not have the flavors of a great French champagne, but it serves quite well for toasting your daughter's engagement or your husband's promotion — or just for sipping as an apertif. 2. Selbach-Oster 1989 Riesling Hochgewachs. A round, creamy richness characterizes this German white wine, which possesses an intense, perfumed nose. Look for the scents and flavors of green apples when you drink it, as well as a "lemon-lime-like acidity." Works well as an apertif or with delicately-flavored fishes like sole or turbot. 3. Cousino-Macul 1990 Chardonnay. Over the past l four or five years South America has emerged as a terrific source of fine wines at value prices. This white wine, produced in Chile, has a "lovely buttery, honeyed, ap- ple and orange-scented bou- quet," as well as "ripe, fleshy, impeccably balanced flavors." Perfect for sipping by the pool on a summer day, or serve with chicken or fish. 4. Fetzer 1989 Sundial Chardonnay. One of the most popular California Chardonnays, this medium- sized all purpose white wine has a "charming, lemony, apple-like bouquet," accom- panied by crisp, fruity flavors. Drink with chicken and fish dishes, or with pizza. "This Chardonnay may not be the most complex wine," says Mr. Parker, "but it delivers palate and purse satisfaction." Over the past four or five years South America has emerged as a terrific source of fine wines at value prices. 5. Lindemans 1990 Char- donnay Bin 65. Australia is still one of the leaders in pro- viding values in quality wines, as this lush white wine demonstrates. A bit "bigger" than the preceding wines, it possesses an opulent ripeness, as well as a freshness deriv- ed from a good acidity. The bouquet offers up aromas of pineapples, oranges, and ripe apples. It complements fuller flavored fishes such as salmon or bluefish. 6. Columbia Crest 1988 Merlot. Fifteen years ago, no one thought of Washington State as a source of great wines. Times have changed. With red wines like this one, a "soft, very round, generous, clean-textured" potion that "bursts with the aromas of chocolate, berries, mocha and herbs," the region is now on most wine lovers' maps. The Merlot is full-bodied enough to stand up to roast chicken or herbed lamb. 7. Vidal-Fleury 1988 Cotes du Rhone. While the Burgundy and Bordeaux regions of France are produc- ing wines that are too pricey for most peoples' pockets, the Rhone Valley, that beautiful, sun-drenched area south of Lyon, is offering affordable, quality red wines like this one. Full-bodied, laden with "rich, roasted, peppery, black- cherry flavors," it possesses a lusciously soft texture and good depth. Enjoy with chicken in wine sauce, pot
