Ancient Setting Is Spot
For Exciting Night-Life

A

lthough Jaffa (known
in Hebrew as Yafo) is
one of the world's
most ancient ports, it relies
on more than history to at-
tract visitors. Old Jaffa is in
many senses quite new, hav-
ing been renovated in the
late 1960s into an attractive
maze of alleyways and piaz-
zas.
Designed as a leisure
center for adjoining Tel Aviv
and its overseas visitors, Old
Jaffa includes an artists'
colony with shops designed
for those seeking expensive
arts and crafts and clothing.
These stores are open till
midnight to entice the night
birds who frequent Jaffa's
many restaurants, bars,
clubs and discotheques.
Indeed, all of Tel Aviv is
famous for its nightlife. At
the hub of a metropolitan
area housing 1.65 million
people, Israelis will drive in
to spend a night out in Tel
Aviv and Jaffa. Many of the
L5 million tourists who visit
the country yearly also enjoy
the entertainment offered by
the city.
"All of Israel is special,"
says Benni Cohen, spokes-
man for the Tel Aviv-Jaffa
municipality. "But Tel Aviv
is at the pulsating heart of
this modern, dynamic coun-
try. Tel Aviv-Jaffa is a
vibrant metropolis with a
vivacious population. If you
want excitement, then you
must come to Tel Aviv and
Jaffa."
Within Tel Aviv itself,
tens of thousands stroll each
night down Dizengoff Street,
the city's main thoroughfare.
Sidewalk cafes abound and
the streets buzz with life until
2 a.m. The same is true of the
recently renovated beach pro-
menade, from Namir Square
southwards.
Israelis are a gregarious

people. They like to meet
friends and chat over coffee.
The warm weather for most
of the year encourages this
outdoor informality. There is
plenty to do indoors, too,
with many cinemas and
first-rate theaters and con-
cert halls like the cultural
complex that includes the
Mann Auditorium and the
Habimah Theater. But here,
also, informality
predominates.
Jaffa is informal, too.
Kedumim Square is at the
heart of the renovated sector
of the town. Visitors don't
need to spend much money,
they can simply wander, en-
joying the newly-laid parks

and palm trees and the view
of Tel Aviv's Mediterranean
coastline to the north.
It was in Jaffa that Jonah
set sail on his fateful voyage
to Nineveh, which ended in
the belly of a whale. It was
from Jaffa that the cedars
and other building materials
were brought to build the
two temples. And according
to Greek legend, it was off
Jaffa's shore that An-
dromeda was chained to a
rock in the sea by a jealous
Poseidon, to be rescued by
Perseus.
The city's cosmopolitan
history is reflected in the
stores and restaurants that
can be found in its ancient
alleys. The shops sell the
wares of local artists and
craftspeople whose styles
range from traditional Jew-
ish, both East European and
Middle Eastern, to contem-
porary Western creations
