Croatian Seeks
Australian Support
Sydney, Australia (JTA) —
A Croatian Jewish patriot
trying to enlist Australian
Jewry's support of his coun-
try ' s struggle for in-
dependence was hard press-
ed to convince Jewish
leaders here that the
breakaway republic bears no
vestiges of its Nazi past.
Mijahlo Montiljo, deputy
foreign minister of the Croa-
tian republic, tried to refute
charges that the Croatian
leadership is fascist or anti-
Semitic.
Meeting with the Ex-
ecutive Council of
Australian Jewry here last
week, he acknowledged that
Ante Pavelic, leader of the
wartime Nazi puppet state of
Croatia, was "a war
criminal," as bad for Jews as
Adolf Hitler.
Mr. Montiljo insisted,
however, that the new Croa-
tian leadership had no
ideological links to Mr.
Pavelic's anti-Semitic
Ustashi party.
But the main Croatian
community center in
Melbourne is named in
honor of Mr. Pavelic, Mr.
Montiljo was told.
He was also reminded that
Dr. Luka Budak, president
of the Australian Croatian
Community Council, had at
least partially endorsed, in a
radio interview, a statement
attributed to Croatian Pres-
ident Franjo Tudjman that
Jews are "selfish, crafty
unreliable, miserly and
underhanded."
Mr. Budak subsequently
claimed he was not anti-
Jewish and had been "set
up" by the radio inter-
viewer.
Mr. Montiljo said Mr. Tud-
jman has gone out of his way
to promote and protect Croa-
tian Jewry.
But Leslie Caplan, presi-
dent of the Executive Coun-
cil, said Australian Jewry
needs confidence-building
measures. "We cannot ig-
nore outstanding problems
with the leadership of the
Australian Croatian com-
munity," he said.
Nazi Defender
Heard In Australia
Sydney, Australia (JTA) —
The Toronto lawyer who has
defended Nazi war criminals
and neo-Nazi activists in
Canada has been spreading
anti-Semitic and Holocaust
revisionist propaganda in
Australia, in the familiar
guise of "Zionist conspiracy"
theories.
Douglas Christie, the
lawyer for revisionist pam-
phleteer Ernst Zundel and
several suspected war
criminals living in Canada,
has been on a speaking tour
for the Australian League of
Rights, a racist organization
that has sponsored his ap-
pearances in Melbourne,
Adelaide, Canberra, Sydney
and Brisbane.
Mr. Christie told radio
listeners in Adelaide, South
Australia, last week that
"the majority of historians"
were proved wrong on the
Holocaust by his client Mr.
Zundel, whose first convic-
tion was reversed on a
technicality.
He claimed the figure of 6
million Jewish Holocaust
dead was concocted to satisfy
a political agenda rather
than reflect historical events
and that an "international
Zionist conspiracy" is trying
to impose "a reign of terror"
against "anyone who denies
the Holocaust in Australia."
Jewish groups accused the
Australian Broadcasting
Corp. of unintentionally
promoting racist propagan-
da by failing to identify Mr.
Christie as the defender of
several suspected war
criminals.
They pointed out that his
sponsor is an organization
identified in the latest report
of the Australian Human
Rights and Equal Oppor-
tunities Commission as "the
most influential and effec-
tive, as well as the best
organized and most substan-
tially financed, racist organ-
ization in Australia."
Mr. Christie claimed that
legislation recently adopted
in Canada and Australia to
bring war criminals to
justice was introduced to
satisfy the "desire and objec-
tive of Zionist groups." Such
legislation is "opposed to the
Christian vision of justice,"
he said.
The prophet was essentially
a man of the future; he did
not live in the past, the past
lived in him.
