it would be Isaac rather than
his half-brother, Ishmael, who
would receive the birthright
from Abraham. They deter-
mined the destiny of the
Jewish people.
We can be inspired by the
extent to which the Torah
represented a new vision of
the role of women. These two
strong matriarchs play the
central theological role in
determining that the cove-
nant made between God and
Abraham is passed to the
descendents of Isaac and
Jacob: the Jewish people. We
owe our special role in God's
design to the forcefulness and
the strength of these two
great mothers. It is they who
are responsible for our
Toledot: our generations —
our history. ❑

Young Israel Sets
Memorial Service

Young Israel of Southfield
will hold a memorial service,
commemorating the 53rd
anniversary of Kristallnacht,
10:30 a.m. Nov. 10 at the syn-
agogue. The service will in-
clude the dedication of a
Holocaust memorial plaque
and the unveiling of six
yellow stars, representing 1
million victims each.
In addition, the event will
feature a slide presentation,
courtesy of the Holocaust
Memorial Center. Through
support of the Morris Weiss,
Mantel and Czuckerman
families, a martyrs' plaque
will be dedicated.
The comunity is invited.
Refreshments will be served.

Temple Beth El
Acquires Chuppah

Weddings at Temple Beth
El will take place against the
backdrop of a new chuppah
designed and executed by
Toronto textile artist Temma
Gentles. A tapestry incor-
porating Judaic symbols, the
chuppah also is reflective of
the architectural design of
the sanctuary.
Ms. Gentles, an artist who
traces her involvement with
Judaic art to her love of fabric,
a career in art education and
her close affiliation with her
home congregation, Holy
Blossom Temple in Toronto,
accepted her first commission
in 1976, a hand-woven tallit
for her rabbi.
Unlike the conventional
chuppah, the Temple Beth El
chuppah opens toward the
ceiling so one may view two
trees that form the backdrop
and ascend skyward.
