Seas And Beaches
Welcome Travelers

I

srael is not blessed with
an abundance of mineral
resources but it is endow-
ed with biblical and historic
riches, a year-round mild
climate, and the shores of
four seas — the Red, the
Med, the Dead and the Sea of
Galilee.
With sunny beaches being
one of the most important
components of the interna-
tional tourism and vacation
industry, Israel has no less
than 226 miles of coastal
waters. Most of the beaches
along these coasts are
equipped with modern
facilities. Because of their
proximity to one another,
even visitors with limited
time can sample the special
charms of each sea.
The longest stretch of
seashore is found along the
137 miles of the Mediterra-
nean. It begins at Rosh ha-
Nikra in the north, and runs
south to the Egyptian border
near Rafiah.
One of the most popular
Mediterranean beach
resorts, particularly with
European holidaymakers, is
Netanya, a city of about
100,000 inhabitants, 16
miles north of Tel Aviv. Per-
ched on the cliffs overlook-
ing the sea, it boasts one of
the finest landscaped beach
promenades in the country,
with flights of steps leading
down to eight beaches.
Breakwaters have turned
this strip of sea into a series
of quiet bays. Some 30 ho-
tels, many of them along the
beachfront, provide over
2,000 rooms in a variety of
categories. The city is also
known as Israel's diamond
capital and citrus center.
Located near Israel's nor-
thern border is Nahariya, a
favorite seaside resort for
Israeli newlyweds, as well as
other local and foreign vaca-
tioners. One of its beautiful
beaches has several swimm-
ing pools; another offers sail-
ing and is quickly becoming
an international wind surf-
ing center. The town is split
by a quiet canal and is lined
with charming sidewalk
cafes.
Israel's undisputed center
for commerce and culture,
fashion and food, is Tel Aviv,
a bustling modern metropo-
lis of 320,000. With its long
string of beaches (one of
which has a year-round
heated seawater pool) and
splendid waterfront pro-
menade, it is a mecca for
tourists. Among its 40 hotels
and almost 5,500 rooms are

several posh beachfront
properties. Tel Aviv also
boasts the largest marina in
the Middle East.
Just south of the city are
the cobble-stoned streets of
Old Jaffa, a picturesque an-
cient port that has become
known for its vibrant
nightlife.
Some of Israel's fanciest
beaches and seaside hotels
are found a few miles north
of Tel Aviv, in Herzliya,
home to Israel's interna-
tional diplomatic commun-
ity.
Several other spots along
Israel's northern Mediterra-
nean coast boast attractive
bathing beaches, among
them Haifa, where the
visitor can ride a cable car
from the fine seashore to the
top of Mount Carmel, for a
breathtaking view of the
bay; Akko (Acre), with its
Crusader walls overlooking

the sea, its marina and fine
seafood restaurants;
Caesarea with its restored
Roman amphitheater,
modern golf course, and
delicious restaurants; and
Nahsholim, Mikhmoret and
Shefayim, with their tran-
quil beaches.
South of Tel Aviv, lovely
beaches can be found at
Ashdod and Ashqelon, an
ancient Philistine city whose
ruins have been preserved in
a sprawling park and picnic
area along the coast.
Eilat, Israel's southern-
most holiday resort on the
Red Sea, has warm
temperatures and an
average 360 sunny days a
year. Every winter, direct
charter flights bring
thousands of European vaca-
tioners to this Red Sea
resort, particularly from the
United Kingdom, Scan-
dinavia, Germany and
France.
The coral reefs and exotic
marine life found in the Gulf
of Eilat (especially at Coral
Beach) have turned it into
an international diving
