Saving Plan Helps Teens Get To Israel Detroit's Jewish communi- ty offers a variety of oppor- tunities to visit Israel — for travel, work or study — and many ways to obtain scholar- ships to get there. Under the auspices of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, the Israel Desk's Center for Israel Scholarships offers informa- tion on travel to Israel and where to obtain assistance. Scholarships are generally available from congregations, community and youth groups and national organizations. In addition, a special sav- ings plan helps youth and their families put funds aside for an Israel experience. The Ben Teitel Israel Incentive Savings Club, a joint commit- ment between students' families and the community, encourages teen-agers to visit Israel on organized educa- tional trips. Participants also must continue their formal Jewish educational programs here at home. Students in the fifth grade at Detroit area Jewish schools are eligible. The plan provides $100 for each year a student at an approved Detroit Jewish day, Sunday or afternoon school saves $150 toward Israel travel-study. To receive matching funds, students must participate in the plan for at least four years. Up to $700 in matching funds may be received for the cost of an educational trip to Israel. For information about scholarships or the Ben Teitel Israel Incentive Savings Club, call Sivan Maas, community schlicha at the Israel Desk, 661-5440.
