"Reform believes in change," Rabbi Polish said. "Once Jews were Reform be- cause they needed it to help them be Americans. Now the question is, how can we live Jewish lives?" The sense of Reform's direction will come, in part, out of reliance on Reform Halachah, "which may take 100 years to develop into something clear in every area," according to Rabbi Walter Jacob, president of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, the movement's rabbinic arm. Speaking at the biennial, Rabbi Jacob said that codification of Reform posi- tion and practice is needed, as is more centralized Reform authority. "We have autonomy and therefore we have chaos," he said. "We need a greater sense of discipline and sense of direction. Build-your-own Judaism is absurd." Rabbi Schindler and others called for a return to the texts that are the very foundation of the Jewish re- ligion. "Deeds, however good, when detached from Torah study are trivialized and de- nied their Jewish moor- ings," Rabbi Schindler said. "Without such a mooring, deeds become entirely non- obligatory. They can be ac- cepted or rejected at whim." "There is a much greater thirst for the holy" in Reform than ever, Rabbi Schindler said. Reform Jews "want to feel, they are sear- ching for that which may not necessarily be seen, but which is, nonetheless, real." ❑ The Jewish Telegraphic Agency contributed to this story. ramrami TH EVERYTHING ELSE GOING ON, AT LEAST YOU SHOULD HAVE A GOOD DOCTOR BILLS YOUR IN-LAWS TRAFFIC TICKET YOUR NAILS TELEVISION YOUR KIDS THE CARPOOL INTEREST RATES THE ENVIORNMENT TAXES HIS SECRETARY THE LITTER BOX DEADLINES DRY CLEANERS P.M.S.
