Youth Village
Aids Children

Hofim, Israel — Most of the
280 Ethiopian Jewish
children at the Hofim Youth
Aliyah village are survivors
of loss, hunger and violence.
It's difficult to find an Ethio-
pian child at Hofim who did
not lose a relative en route to
Israel. Some of the girls were
raped as they trekked across
Afrike. Many of the boys were
beaten and robbed.
These are the children who
arrived before the airlift
operation. Orphaned, or
children of one-parent
families, they started coming
to Hofim in 1984. They've had
the support of psychologists
and the attention that comes
with special enrichment pro-
grams. Like 14-year-old Gina
Maledel, for whom Hofim has
been home since she was 7,
they've learned to live with
the past while groping to
become Israeli.
Ms. Maledel is a member of
the Hofim choir, which was
coached by the renowned
Israeli song writer, Naomie
Shemer. After the choir ap-
peared recently on national
television, Ms. Maledel ex-
perienced an identity cathar-
sis. She says, "I watched
myself on television singing
in Hebrew. It was then that I
knew I was a real Israeli."
Shraya Kay, Hofim's direc-
tor, says that this embodies
Youth Aliyah's goal. She ex-
plains, "We try to turn these
immigrants into Israelis
while at the same time mak-
ing them proud of their Ethio-
pian Jewish heritage." Youth
Aliyah currently cares for
3,000 Ethiopian Jewish
children and with the recent
arrivals from the airlift opera-
tion this number will more
than double.

Youth Aliyah is part of the
Jewish Agency, which is the
primary recipient of UJA
funds. Usually Youth Aliyah
places children in distress in
boarding schools throughout
the country. Hofim is unusual
in that it is one of only four
villages actually owned and
operated by the Jewish
Agency.
The village also has some
distinctive staff members.
Ethiopian-born Tazana Abba
lived at Hofim for three years
before joining the army's elite
paratroop unit. He's now back
at Hofim — but this time as
a teacher. He says, "This
place is very special. It is
much more than a school. It's
a home. I received so much
kindness and warmth here
when the world seemed such
a harsh, cruel and lonely
place."
