Pioneer
Tel Aviv (JTA) — Yosef
Almogi, a Haganah pioneer
and World War II soldier
whose career included mem-
bership in the Knesset and
Cabinet, died of cancer last
week in Haifa. He was 81.
Born in Poland in 1910,
Mr. Almogi came to
Palestine in 1930 and settled
on Kibbutz Ramat
Hakovesh. There, he worked
as a farmer and a trainee of
Haganah, the embryo
defense organization of Jews
in Palestine.
During the 1936 Arab
uprising, Mr. Almogi com-
manded the defenses of Kfar
Sava.
He was one of the first Pa-
lestinian Jews to volunteer
for the British army at the
start of World War II. He
rose to the rank of sergeant
and became a prisoner of the
German army in Greece
from 1941 to 1945.
Returning to Haifa in
1945, Mr. Almogi launched
his political career as secre-
tary of the local branch of
Mapai, the principal
forerunner of today's Labor
Party.
Mr. Almogi was first elect-
ed to the Knesset in 1955
and served in several Labor-
led governments as minister
of labor, minister of housing
and a minister without port-
folio.

Haifa from 1973 to 1976,
after which he was chairman
of the Executives of the Jew-
ish Agency and World
Zionist Organization from
1976 to 1978.
