I NEWS ❑ Suspenders Europe Owes Says Judge Brussels (JTA) — Europe, waxing rich and powerful as it moves toward economic and political integration, owes the Jewish people a debt for the wrongs done them over the centuries on European soil, according to an Israeli judge. Foremost among its obligations is to "help safeguard the homeland of the Jewish people, the state of Israel," Judge Hadassah Ben-Itto said in her address before the International Association of Jewish Lawyers and Jurists World Council, whose three-day meeting opened here last week. Judge Ben-Itto, who chairs the association, expressed concern over the "resurgence of anti- Semitism in most countries" of Europe. "Acts which were taboo immediately after the Holo- caust have become legiti- mate again," she told the assembly of 200 lawyers and judges from 20 countries. Yitzhak Nemer, president of the Israel Bar Association, also referred to anti- Semitism in Europe. "It's really a tragedy that more democratization in cer- tain countries has brought to the surface strong new waves of hatred against Jews," he said. A debate was held on legislative means to combat anti-Jewish pro- paganda. Speakers included Belgium's deputy prime minister and justice min- ister, Melchior Wathelet; European Commissioner Martin Bangemann; Willy de Clercq, chairman of the Israel-Europe group at the European Parliament; and Ya'acov Cohen, deputy di- rector general of the Israeli Foreign Ministry. The association, based in Israel, was founded in 1969 and presently has 3,000 members worldwide. The meeting, held here under the patronage of the European Community's Ex- ecutive Commission, was sponsored by The European, a weekly published by the late Anglo-Jewish press tycoon, Robert Maxwell. In 1978, following the sign- ing of the Egypt-Israel peace agreement two years previously, Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Presi- dent Anwar Sadat jointly received the Nobel Peace Prize. ❑ Cuff Links ❑ Scarves ❑ Tie Racks ❑ Collar bars, Tie Tacs and Tie Chains ❑ Hankies and Pocket Squares ❑ Patterned Socks ❑ Sport Shirts ❑ French Cuff Dress Shirts ❑ Cruise Wear ❑ Tie and Hankie Sets When it's your decision to choose a nursing care residence... under $ 3 5 ❑ Formal Dress Shirts & Cummer- bund Sets ❑ Christian Dior Jogging Suits & Robes ❑ Colours by Alexan- der Julian Sweaters Monday-Saturday 9:30 a.m.-6:00 p.m. Thurs. 9:30 a.m.-7 p.m., Sun. 12-4 p.m. Windemere offers a choice you can feel good about Everything always 20%-3 5 % Off Retail You may never face a more difficult decision under $ 1 5 under $ 70 SPECIAL HOLIDAY HOURS BEGINING SUNDAY, DECEMBER 1ST PARKING AND ENTRANCE IN REAR than moving a loved one into a nursing home.
