held its seventh an-
nual dinner Monday at Con-
gregation Shaarey Zedek to
honor three new inductees
and to raise money for its
annual Hall of Fame Games.
The new inductees, Julius

Eliowitz, were honored for
their athletic exploits in
several sports.
Mr. Magidsohn, a football
great at the University of
Michigan, later became one
of the sport's premier refer-

Mr. Eliowitz, who starred
in the Canadian Football
League, later coached
baseball and football in
Detroit's Public School
League. Mr. Eliowitz's
daughters, Linda Gorback
and Susan Hoover, accepted
the award.

Family-To-Family
Has Nov. Orientations

America's premier Jewish newspaper, the English-language Forward,

continues the tradition of the 95-year old Yiddish Forverts. We have

bureaus in Moscow, New York, Tel Aviv, Washington, and Jerusalem. This

year we were nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. And we have published

more than a hundred book reviews since our first issue in 1990. This year

we are celebrating Jewish book month with a special Jewish book review.

We thank the Metro-Detroit Jewish community center for inviting us to

participate in the book fair. Complimentary copies of this special book

review will be available at the book fair throughout the month.

Mr. Goldman, known af-
fectionately as "Goldie,"
played and coached on the
1936 silver medal Canadian
Olympic basketball team. In
his often self-deprecating ac-
ceptance speech, Mr.
Goldman spoke about the
many ways in which sports
have changed over the years.
And, he added, "it's much
more gratifying to be in-
ducted in person, rather
than posthumously."
Mike Adray, who has sup-
ported amateur sports for
over three decades, was
honored with the Alvin N.
Foon Award.
The Jewish Hall of Fame
also sponsored a silent auc-
tion, which raised $12,000
for the Hall of Fame Games,
an event held in the summer
for "friendly competition"
between children and adults
with disabilities. The money
also will go towards a schol-
arship fund for needy Jewish
athletes. 1=1

Local families and in-
dividuals interested in
meeting newcomers from the
Soviet Union for friendship
and enriching Jewish ex-
periences may sign up for one
of two orientation sessions,
7:30 p.m. Nov. 14 or 21, at the
United Hebrew Schools. Two
tracks are being offered.
The new format will allow
participants to meet with new
Americans for four shared ex-
periences: getting around in
Detroit and the suburbs;
shopping at supermarkets
and department stores;
visiting cultural centers, spor-
ting events and community
activities; and learning
Jewish customs and rituals.
This option allows a single
family member to participate
in the program without re-
quiring the rest of the family
to commit to the program.
The other format, a one-
year commitment, is
available for families
volunteering with the pro-
gram on an ongoing basis.
To be a part of Family-To-
Family, one person per fami-
ly is required to attend an
orientation session. There is
no financial obligation by
participants.
Co-sponsored by the Na-
tional Council of Jewish
Women and the Jewish
Federation Women's Division,

Family-To-Family has made
more than 290 matches in the
Detroit area.
For information about be-
ing marched with a new
American family or the orien-
tation session, call Family-To-
Family, 258-6000.

Petosky Joins
Jewish Conference

The Jewish community of
Petoskey has joined the
Michigan Jewish Conference,
a statewide network to
facilitate the political and
community relations needs of
its member communities.
Petoskey is represented in
the MJC by Dr. Harold
Willens, president of the
95-year-old Temple B'nai
Israel, which has 85
members. The Jewish com-
munity has 25 year-round
families and many summer
residents.
Ralph Gerson is president of
the 13-member conference,
which was formed to establish
and maintain a presence in
Lansing and to engage in ad-
vocacy on behalf of the state-
wide Jewish community. The
MJC informs public officials
about issues of importance to
its members and builds coali-
tions with other human needs
and social justice
organizations.
