ON THE MAYFAIR
Eva Kwong and Kirk
Mangus, who are husband
and wife, have given their
allegiance to a specific
material and have devoted
themselves to exploring its
aesthetic possibilities. Ms.
Kwong and Mr. Mangus both
have chosen clay, although
they represent different
extremes.
Kirk Mangus specializes in
the rude and crude handling
of clay yet is very much com-
mitted to the rich history and
tradition of this ancient
medium. His directness
brings to mind rneo-expres-
sionism, especially consider-
ing the fact that every piece
is, more or less, figurative. Mr.
Mangus however, has been
working in this manner for
more than 20 years; the
crudeness employed in his
work has nothing to do with

an attempt to be trendy. He
performs the task of drawing
on a three-dimensional sur-
face and his creations com-
municate meanings that
range from figurative to sym-
bolic, humorous to threaten-
ing, and universal to deeply
personal and private.
Quietness is dominant in
Eva Kwong's work. There is
also less discourse about pots
and pottery. Ms. Kwong's
ceramic sculpture is strongly
Flow
suggestive — associations
could readily be made to
fruits, torsos, cell division,
sexual organs and other body
parts — but no one thing in
particular. The initial reac-
tion to the work is to list
associations called up by the
various shapes and to marvel
at their ambiguity.
The subjects of Kwong's
work often deal with
regeneration and the place of
humanity in the cosmos. The
forms are based on interac-
tions between figurative and
land forms. According to the
artist, a lot of concerns in her
work run back in time both to
her undergraduate and
graduate days.
Ms. Kwong became in-
terested in capturing op-
posites or polarites in a piece,
like having it be a very solid
mountain in a way that also
feels ephemeral. Color and
texture play a role in subver-
ting the initial reading of
these pieces, too.
