The Lakers rush the field, tackling and slapping any- one wearing their green and white. The players retreat to their locker room, singing the West Bloomfield fight song, which sounds like one note sung at different speeds. Coach Brandell enters the room, and every- one goes quiet. They kneel in silentprayer. He rises. "This is the proudest mo- ment I can think of," he says, the intensity lost from his voice. "Some people said we shouldn't have been on the same field with these guys. Well, tonight, we pro- ved them wrong." After the coach retreats to his office to celebrate with his assistants, the players mill around, giving high fives and hugs to everyone. Todd Graziano, the place kicker, muses on his second life after missing the extra point. "I got it back," he said. And Brian "Fresh Meat" Hillman gets his initiation as a full-fledged varsity player. He gets dunked, still wearing some of his pads, in a cold shower. All the work seems to pay off. Was it worth it? In the coach's room, they're already second- guessing themselves. Next week, they'll do things a little differently. But not too differently. 0 Metro Detroit's newest old bank is still the best! Interest rates as of 10-23-91 MONEY MARKET RATES . .
