is getting his teammates
jacked up.
"We need 48 minutes of
emotion, 48 minutes of
pride," he shouts.
Thomas Andre, the team's
quarterback, adds his mes-
sage: "I've -never had any
respect from this team.
We're going to get some to-
night."
Coach Brandell comes in
wearing a brand new green
sweatsuit and grabs the at-
tention of his players. They
are riveted to his words. He
talks calmly, but with con-
viction:
"This is ours. Somebody is
trying to come into our home
and take something away
from us." He talks about
teamwork. About all the
time and effort that went
into preparation for this
game. Dondero doesn't just
want to beat us, he's saying.
They want to take our work
away.
The team huddles once
more and then leaves for the
field. As they do, they tap a
wooden sign with gold
letters: "Laker Pride."
As soon as the players hit
the field, everything moves
in hyperspeed.
And at the half, Dondero
leads, 6-0. Coach Brandell is
determined not to let this
game slip away. The players
are just as determined. Todd
Levin speaks for the seniors
in the locker room.
"We can beat these guys.
They're not better than we
are."
The second half belongs to
the Lakers. Their sideline is
hopping with energy. Across
the field, Dondero's squad is
closing ranks. They even
look smaller.
The Lakers mount a drive
of screen passes, short runs
and Chris Harden. Chris
Harden, a halfback, is one of
the team's best players. He
is also assistant coach Tom
Harden's son. There's been a
Harden before who played
for West Bloomfield. There'll
be another. But for this mo-
ment, it's Chris' turn.
His little brother, now in
eighth grade, is at the game.
And his father, an assistant
coach, is definitely there.
Tom Harden demands a lot
from his players, and most of
all, from his son.
What's worse, in the
natural order of things,
players complain about
coaches. But they don't com-
plain about Torn Harden
when Chris is around.
"Sometimes they go home
and hate you," Tom said.
Tonight, however, Chris is
doing all the right things.
He scores the Lakers' first
touchdown. Score tied, 6-6.
Place kicker Neil Graziano
trots out for the extra point.
The kick sails through the
goal posts cleanly, but
there's a flag on the play.
The Lakers are called for il-
legal procedure. Re-kick.
Graziano boots it wide. The
score stays tied.
Dondero drives to the
Laker 11-yard-line, where
they line up for a field goal.
On the sidelines, the Lakers
have only a few seconds to
get nervous. When the ball
is snapped, no one speaks
And when the kick is booted
meekly, short of the
goalposts, the Lakers run
wildly along the sidelines.
Overtime.
Michigan's high school
football rules say that in
overtime, each team gets a
chance to score from the op-
posing team's 10-yard line.
You get four downs and
that's it.
The Lakers go first. A cou-
ple of runs bring them to the
2-yard-line for fourth down.
Chris Harden bowls in for
the score. Graziano makes
the extra point kick. 13-6.
Dondero's turn. They score
on their first play. But the
Oaks have to get the extra
point. They try to score on a
pass, but it is thrown wide.
