Mr. Stern, in an AJC report titled "Crown Heights: A Case Study in Anti-Semitism and Com- munity Relations," faulted the Rev. Sharpton for fann- ing "rage with lies." He added that the Rev. Sharp- ton's real political following has never been proven. In his funeral eulogy for Gavin Cato, the Rev. Sharp- ton spoke directly to the Jewish community of Crown Heights: "We've shown where we can burn . . . We must not reprimand our children for outrage when it is the outrage that was put in them by an oppressive system." His rhetoric did not change when he spoke in Ann Ar- bor, but he did not arouse the deep black-Jewish ten- sions left at Michigan State University last year when the reverend's friend, Louis Farrakhan, spoke. In his speech to a crowd of 1,200 on Tuesday, the Rev. Sharpton thundered against George Bush, black puppets of the white "power elite," the media, affirmative ac- tion, the Gulf War and the U.S. Senate, among others. He also supported Leonard Jeffries, the City College of New York professor who said there's a "conspiracy" by Jews and Italians in Hollywood to "work for the destruction of black people." Although he was greeted warmly by many students, a small group of Jewish students banded together to oppose the Rev. Sharpton's presence on the campus. "The Rev. Al Sharpton at the University of Michigan is a paradox. Al Sharpton spreads hate. His mission is to turn black against white, black against black," read the group's flyer, which was handed out to the audience before the speech. Wendy Shanker, a U-M student who organized the group, said the Rev. Sharp- ton's speech did "irreparable damage" to black-Jewish re- lations on campus. "What are we pretending to do here? If not in the uni- versity, where are we going to learn to live together?" Ms. Shanker said. The criticism doesn't touch him. The Rev. Sharpton wants to serve civil suit papers not only to the driver of the vehicle who accidentally ran over Gavin Cato, but to his lawyer, the private am- bulance that first responded to the scene, the district at- torney, Rabbi Menachem Schneerson and the city of New York.
