Van Wyk said Canadian
statistics show one out of
every eight women are in-
volved in an abusive rela-
tionship.
Neither she nor Mrs. Jaffa
believes the statistics are
any less significant for Jew-
ish women.
"For too long, Jewish wo-
men have felt their commun-
ity is not a safe place in
which to discuss spousal
abuse," said Mrs. Jaffa of
JFS. "They don't feel they'd
be welcome. The Jewish
community prefers to
believe domestic violence
doesn't occur. They'd rather
not have their illusions shat-
tered."

Now, sees more than 600
women and children each
year. With 44 offices, they
are the largest women's
shelter in Michigan. Of the
approximately 300 women
HAVEN accepts, 5 to 6 per-
cent are Jewish. Of the more
than 1,000 women HAVEN
counsels, 7 to 8 percent are
Jewish.
"I've admitted Jewish Or-
thodox women before," Mrs.
Caine said. "Not many, but
their needs are the same as
anyone else's. Their only dif-
ference is that they need
kosher food, which we'll pro-
vide.
"No religious group con-
dones this kind of violence,"
she said. "It doesn't matter
if you're Jewish, Chaldean,
or Catholic — domestic
violence and sexual assault
cross all types of boun-
daries."
Sherry Berliner Dimarsky,
executive director of Shalva, a
Jewish women's referral ser-
vice in Chicago, said Shalva
worked with 130 families in
1990.
"Domestic violence in the
Jewish community is as old
as the Talmud," said Mrs.
Dimarsky, an alumnus of
the University of Michigan.
"But Jewish communities of
old took responsibility for
punishing the perpetrators.
Jewish communities today
don't have that kind of in-
fluence."
Mrs. Jaffa said if violence
against women and children
isn't stopped, it will replay
itself in future generations.
"A women told me last
week she should have
divorced her husband 10
years before she finally did,"
she said. "He'd beaten her
for years. She needed help
and didn't go for it. We want
women and their families to
seek us out. If necessary,
we'll help them leave their
abusive situations." El
