WHEN IT COMES TO

one example of how unique ideas

the French derived their fleur-de-lis
patterns. Among the bearded types,
Mr. Kunst recommends Florentina
(circa 1500), a pale silvery gray and
one of the earliest to bloom; Grac-
chus (1884), with butter-yellow stan-
dards and maroon falls; and San Fran-
cisco (1927), white-with-purple and
the first to win the Dykes Medal,
highest honor of the American Iris
Society.

Old-Fashioned Roses

Plant. Which is why if you're in the

Certain rose growers have for many
years been into historic types such as
the Moss, Bourbon and Damask.
Mr. Kunst points out that a cultivar
(variety) introduced in 1980 is NOT
like the old ones. The contemporary
multiflora, with numerous tiny
blooms, probably most resembles the
more historic roses. But the. stunning
grandifloras with their large luscious
flowers are way off base as far as
historic accuracy is concerned. Thus,
when possible, Mr. Kunst likes to
know and use the cultivar (or varie-
ty) names. Then he knows he has ex-
actly the right plant.
This observation applies not only
to roses but to other antique flowers
as well. For instance, a petunia from
a number of years ago is different
from a modern petunia. Another ex-
ample are ageratums, the dwarf blue-
purple plants so commonly used as
bedding plants today. The original
ageratums used to grow about 18
inches tall.
But some plant species, like Madon-
na lilies, haven't changed at all since
they were first used in Crete around
1600 B.C. Another example is Hesperis
matronalis (more commonly known as
Dame's-Rocket) and also Moneyplant
or Honesty (Lunaria annua) with its
magenta and white blooms. No one's
been hybridizing them.
Don't Rush Or Rip Out
You've just purchased an old home.
What is Mr. Kunst's landscaping
advice?
• Take your time. Do not rip out
mature specimens of trees and
shrubs as soon as you move in. You
can't replace them. Instead, plant an-
nuals or put out colorful pots for
awhile before making major deci-
sions.
