Finding Space

No matter how many closets, cabi-
nets and drawers your home may
possess, it's almost a law of nature
that, sooner or later, these storage
spaces will become crammed to
capacity.
To make more room for storage,
find new ways to use the space that's
available.
First, think vertical. Many cabinets
and closets are not used to capacity
because they have no shelves. When
this is the problem, here are some
solutions:
• Use stackable storage bins. This
type of storage accessory allows the
full use of whatever vertical space is
available.
• Use "dead" space. The backs of
cabinet and closet doors can become
storage areas when you install
accessories designed to hold supplies
in a minimum of space. Install them
on lower cabinet doors near the spot
where they're used — the under-sink
cabinets are an ideal location.
• Install shelves. This is a logical
solution when you are unable to
expand horizontally but have more
vertical space for expansion of
storage. For the highest and lowest
shelves, which can cause the
discomfort of stretching or bending
when you need to retrieve an item,
use storage turntables.

Lamp Buying

When it comes to lamps as
accessories, many people are
stumped as to what type of lamp and
what height shade they should buy.
First determine the function of the
lamp, will it be used as task lighting,
to read, sew or work at a desk? Or
will it be ambient lighting — lamps
that add background or mood light?
Maybe you want accent lighting, an
interesting or whimsical lamp that is
really a conversation piece.
Once the use is determined, shade
height is easy to choose. For task
lighting, such as a lamp beside a
reading or work area, the bottom of
the lampshade should be at eye level.
If the light is behind the reader, the
shade should be high enough that the
reader's shadow does not fall on the
reading matter. At a desk, the bottom
of the shade should be at eye level.
