The Colonial Revival period of the
early 20th century was an aesthetic
reaction to the rococo Victorians as
well as a nostalgia for a simpler time.
There were fewer fences around
houses in the Colonial Revival period.
Foundation plantings with deciduous
shrubs started to appear. Front lawns
emptied of flower beds. Colors be-
came cooler and more peaceful —
there was a much greater use of
green.
People gave up their front porches
and moved to the back with terraces
and patios. A terrace might be gravel
or just a grassy area under the trees
Flamboyant but pastel flowers would
be found in the back yard, with mixed
hardy perennial borders planned to
bloom throughout the growing sea-
son.
