"If homeowners are really serious
about a bigger bath, they can knock
down a wall to add square footage,"
says Pat Andrew of Classic Baths in
Birmingham. Inside that big bath-
room, homeowners want more
windows for natural light, a raised
ceiling (either a high flat, tray, or
vaulted ceiling), bigger closets for
seasonal storage, and special
amenities such as a built-in fireplace.
In 1975 American homes averaged
one-and-a-half bathrooms in a typical
1,700 square-foot home, according to
data compiled by Professional Builder
and Remodeler, a building industry
trade magazine. By 1990, two-and-a-
half bathrooms were expected in the
same size house. That figure has
leveled off in new housing, but when
it comes to remodeling existing
housing, the bath is the second most
common job (following the kitchen).
