the delicate pink cyclamen,
which sprouts out of rocky
terrain and was known in
biblical times as "Solomon's
crown." Daisies and wild
mustard often give fields a
lively yellow look. Indeed the
bright yellow crown daisies in
particular, and wildflowers in
general, seem to thrive
especially on ancient ruins
and often hint at potential ar-
chaeological sites.
Says Dr. Menachem Sachs,
director of JNF's Afforesta-
tion Department in the south,
"The country's geographical
position as a meeting point of
four regions means that
besides Mediterranean
species, we also enjoy African,
Arabian and Asian varieties
of plants, too."
Work being carried out by
Dr. Sacks' department in the
Negev is rapidly making the
arid environment there more
conducive to wildflowers,
with savannah . parklands
generating a significant in-
crease in the number of wild-
flowers in the Negev.
One of Dr. Sacks' personal
favorites is the attractive red-
dish orange mountain tulip,
which, along with the nar-
cissus and white lily, is
among a number of wild-
flowers mentioned in the Bi-
ble. Linguistic ambiguity bet-
ween biblical and modern
Hebrew has confounded
many, but the tulip was pro-
bably a "nitzan" in the Bible,
while the lily was called
"shoshan." In any event,
Israel's spring flowers are a
visual experience not to be
missed. ❑ -
