like fun or childlike or
primitive. It's exactly the
same issue with African or
native American or any of the
ethnographic arts."
The DIA exhibition, Ms.
Jones said, is a departure from
typical exhibitions at the In-
stitute. She hopes to further
the interest in traditional
Latin American art and to
"provide greater exposure to
the beauties of indigenous
traditions and art forms.
"It's a very unusual exhibi-

it's not a 'fine art' exhibition.
It's more an installation that
revolves around folk art and
folk customs, and not just ob-

museum by a Latin American
artist outside of Latin
America (the Rivera murals),
and no Latin American collec-

a wider audience. But they
realize that such a hope may
be a double-edged sword.
‘`. . The time will come
when this art, as with other
indigenous arts of the world
will be considered fine art in
a much broader sense," Mrs.
Margolin said. "And it will be
collected by fine art museums
and they will then be the on-
ly people who will be able to
afford it. And that will be too
bad, because this is made by
the people and for the peo-
ple."
