"Ball clubs used to travel by train and they had private cars. You were more of a family because you ate as a team in your own diner car and pldyed cards in another. Club members worked and played together. I remember after every win, in the Yankee club-. house, Tommy Henrich would lead the team in barbershop singing. "But you don't see much of that today. When the game is over, the players give each other the high five and all that stuff. That's fine. Then they get in the clubhouse and a lot of guys can't get showered fast enough to get out of there. A player now signs one of those blockbuster • contracts for three years. He doesn't worry — unless he's a professional — until the third year. When I started, you got paid for the following year-on the basis of what you did the previous year. "It reminds me of the old story when Babe Ruth hit his peak, he was criticized for holding out for an $80,000 contract. Asked why he thought he should be paid more money than the $75,000 salary of the president of the United States, he grumbled, `Why not? I had a better year than he had? " As he sees it, the biggest change in broadcasting in the last 25 years is the use of former athletes instead of pro- fessional announcers in the booth. "Quite understandable from both a sponsor's stand- point and the networks. That's instant credibility," he said. In 1978, Allen's peers voted him and Red Barber the first Ford C. Frick Award for broadcasting excellence, which he considers the great- est honor of his life. Currently, Mel is a speaker on the banquet circuit; in re- cent years he spoke at the Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of Fame annual banquet. Believe it or not, he was the voice on a diaper commercial ("There was no joy in Diaper- ville"). With our interview winding down, our gracious host walked my photographer Sam Siegel and me to the car, while speaking of an old baseball movie about Babe Ruth, starring William Ben- dix. "Just to give you an idea of how bad the movie was," said Mel, slamming the car door, "it showed Ruth hitting his 60th home run in 1927, with Mel Allen announcing it, and in 1927 I was in grade school!" Then he leaned in the win- dow and said, "Got time for one more story, guys?"
