Paris Opens
Exhibition
Paris (JTA) — An exhibi-
tion of rare Hebrew
manuscripts was unveiled at
the National Library here by
Minister of Culture Jack
Lang.
Titled "With a Mighty
Arm," the exhibition,
mounted under the
patronage of President
Francois Mitterrand, con-
sists of 1,479 manuscripts,
most of them never before
shown in public.
Michel Garel, the library's
curator of Hebrew
manuscripts, told the Jewish
Telegraphic Agency that
while the display contains
"some aesthetically
marvelous pieces," he had
also included "some
manuscripts without any ar-
tistic value" because "they
are rich with meaning and
history."
One of these is a prayer
book written in 1613 in
Lithuania, where 35 years
later Cossacks slaughtered
tens of thousands of Jews
and burned every book they
found. •
