ligence reports warning of
violence by terrorist groups
opposed to next week's peace
conference in Madrid, the
Jerusalem police high com-
mand met at national head-
quarters here to plan securi-
ty measures.
"We'll do everything
possible to stop them,
Police Inspector-General
Ya'acov Terner declared.
Police reinforcements al-
ready have been posted on
roads leading to the ad-
ministered territories. The
Israel Defense Force is
mobilizing similarly in the
territories themselves.
Two rejectionist organiza-
tions, the Popular Front for
the Liberation of Palestine
and the Democratic Front
for the Liberation of
Palestine, joined forces with
the violence-prone Islamic
fundamentalist Hamas in a
joint communique.
It urged the Palestinian
people to continue "the arm-
ed struggle.until the libera-
tion of Palestine" is achiev-
ed. It called for a general
strike in the territories on
the day the peace conference
opens.
The communique was a
challenge to the Palestine
Liberation Organization,
which has endorsed the
peace talks, and to PLO sup-
porters in the territories.
Meanwhile, an Arab ter-
rorist was fatally wounded
last week in east Jerusalem
while assembling an ex-
plosive charge. The blast oc-
curred only a few hundred
yards from police head-
quarters in the Sheik Jarrah
neighborhood.
An Arab woman was
hospitalized for a leg wound
after she was shot by a
border policeman whom she
attacked with a knife. The
police officer suffered a
minor wound.
Israel Cotton
In Comeback
Tel Aviv (JTA) — Cotton,
whose growth in Israel has
been drastically cut back be-
cause of its excessive de-
mand for water at a time of
severe drought, may soon
make a comeback here.
A new strain with only
half the irrigation needs of
the previously grown crop
has been successfully de-
veloped, the Hazorea seed
company reported.
Scores of acres were sown
with the water-conserving
crop.
