Detroit. Her father,
Charles, was an employee
in the oil business, where
the owners were Max
Fisher's father and a
cousin, the late Leon Kay.
Leon Kay, who was a
national vice president for
Technion and the Zionist
Organization of America,
was related to her
mother's family, the
Kamisaruks.
She had the opportunity
to dine with dignitaries
because of her cousin's
position. As a young child,
she met Albert Einstein
and Golda Mein "I just
said hello," recalls Ms.
Usher.
She has been affiliated
with the Jewish
Community Center since
1925. "I started at the
first Jewish Center, and I
have never stopped going."
At age 8, she took art
lessons at the first JCC
building, on Medbury and
Woodward. During the
1930s at the Holbrook
Center, she participated in
many first events
including the girls'
basketball team, the
musical Center Capers,
and the fencing team. She
won medals under the
tutelage of Ted Kaczander.
In 1946, she began to
study dance with Fannie
Aronson, a pioneer of
modern dance at the JCC.
She eventually became a
dance instructor and still
teaches dance today at the
JCC. "I've never been
absent in 42 years of
teaching," she says, but
then corrects herself and
recalls she once traveled
to England for two weeks.
In addition to the
wonderful students she
has met over the years,
she has a friend that she
met in the 1940s at the
JCC on Woodward and
Holbrook that she still
sees today. Her friend is
Marion Klingman, the
former women's locker
